Reason for those linear image artifacts Generic equipment discussions · Christian Großmann · ... · 3 · 201 · 1

Hi there,

during the last nights, I collected some data of M51. Today, I stacked the images and in the master frames, i realized a linear halo through all of them. I could not detect those issues in the subs, but I guess they are there and just can't be seen, because they are really faint. The Luminance master I attached is the worst one. I guess it is because I had more subs for it than for the other channels.

I used PI and the WBPP script to create the master lights using the same settings as ever. I also used the same darks and bias frames as for my latest projects. This is the first time the problem occured, so I assume the issue is in the lights. The master flats look good to me, so far. The attached image is a screenshot with just the stf applied with standard settings.

In the past, i had some issues with halos, as well. But these ones are strange, because the are all parallel. I have no idea what causes such issues, because in the image path of the uses ES 127ED refractor, I can't find a straight edge other than those of the sensor window itself of the ASI183MM Pro I used. I can't think of a light source around my place which creates those strange halos.

Do you have any idea, what's the problem here?

Thanks in advance.

CS

Christian

You have probably forgot to turn off Linear Pattern Subtraction in WBPP. This script/setting tends to create such artifacts around bright objects when used with images acquired with CMOS cameras. This setting is more suited for CCD cameras having linear defects (as far as I know).

Double check that your calibration frames match you light frames with respect to gain, etc and that readout mode is the same (if applicable).

As mentioned above, it does look like it is only around the bright areas of the image, so maybe wpbb setting??

Thanks for your replies. That's at least a hint. So I will check as soon as possible.
