Description

M51 (ou galaxie du Tourbillon ; Whirlpool Galaxy) est un couple de galaxies, à 31 millions d'années-lumière de la Terre, composé d'une galaxie spirale régulière massive dont le diamètre est estimé à 100 000 années-lumière et d'une petite galaxie irrégulière. Elle a été découverte en 1773 par Charles Messier.

Ses bras spiraux facilement visibles lui ont valu son surnom de « galaxie tourbillon » (Whirlpool Galaxy en anglais)
