      Description

Van den Bergh 141, a.k.a. Sharpless 2-136, is a reflection nebula of low surface brightness in the constellation Cepheus that has gained a lot of recognition among amateur imagers in recent years. The central bright region is a Bok globule, while the dark cloud at the right is thought to conceal a binary star system in the early stages of formation. [1,2] While this object is often captured in a wider field view, I took the difficult road and imaged it at 1800 mm focal length, as usual. The image is composed of forty-eight 15-minute luminance subs and nine 30-minute RGB subs for 16.5 h integration.

Description: This is a 2021 revision of my best image from 2014. My retired Atik 383L+ camera produced noisy data even from dark skies, because it really needed to be cooled to -30C to perform well. This image was taken in hot Texas weather in the summer, so I had to take 15 minute subs, and lots of them, to get usable LRGB data. Those long subs overexposed the brighter stars badly. Looking back at the raw data makes me very thankful for modern cameras. The revision (done in GIMP) has standard noise reduction blended with Topaz AI Clear to bring the noise levels down.
