Description

Wizard Nebula, narrow band.

I encourage you to look at it full resolution. As you look around, imagine about half of the stars have planetary systems. It is mind boggling.

The Wizard Nebula is roughly 100 light years across. It is about 7000 light years distant. In our sky the colored part of the nebula is about the size of the full Moon. The area is a star factory, The intense light from the new stars illuminates the nebula.

Seven of us share a pier in a remote observatory high in the Sierra Nevada mountains**. This photo represents over 29 hours of exposures. We get 7 to 8 hours of data per night so this image took about four full nights.

** There will be an article in the next Astronomy Technology Today magazine describing how we image remotely, on a hobbyist's budget. It is our experiment. Anyone can do it.
