Description

This is a composite view of the Kamzang trekking campsite on the night of August 23, 2014. The location is narrow valley on a rarely used trail at an elevation of 4310 m. I was deep in the Zanskar mountains, which are northeast of the Great Himalaya Range. I was on a 23 day trek with Kamzang Journeys (kamzang.com) across the ancient kingdom of Zanskar.

The trekkers' individual flashlights shine inside their tents while the blue cooking tent at centre of frame is lit by an open fire built by our cooks and horsemen. The jagged mountains above the campsite are 5560 m high.

The full image is a composite of 29 photographs: 8 of the campsite and mountains and 21 of the sky. All were captured with a Canon 6D and Sigma 35mm f/1.4. I used an AstroTrac for the sky photographs. Exposures for the sky images were 30s, f/1.4 at ISO 1600; for the campsite and mountains 180s, f/2.0 at ISO 6400.

RAW files of the sky were processed using Adobe Bridge and Photoshop CS6 using settings recommended by Roger N. Clark (www.clarkvision.com) who also gave me great advice on gear. Land and sky panoramas were assembled with PTGui Pro then combined using Photoshop. The image is 9500 x 10300 pixels.
