Description

The NGC1023 group is a group of galaxies about 20.6 million light-years away from Earth. The group resides in the Canes Venatici Cloud in the Virgo Super cluster. NGC1023 is an SB0 galaxy, which describes a disc shaped galaxy with a central bulge, but no spiral arms. According to Dr. Harold G. Corwin, Jr., NGC 1023 is one of the nearest early-type galaxies in the sky, and is also the brightest in a group. It has a low-surface-brightness companion (NGC 1023A) attached on the eastern end. Both galaxies may have bars, but they are indistinct on the DSS image. NGC1023 is the nearest lenticular galaxy to the milky way at a distance of 34 million light years and the brightest member of a galaxy group with prominent members like NGC891 and NGC925. The most obvious companion is NGC1023A to the left, which is the reason why both objects are catalogued as Arp 135. Through the disk of luminous material, the bright central bulge and a bar can be seen, that's why NGC1023 is classified as SB0. Discovered by Pierre Mechain 1780.
