Description

IC5146 (The Cocoon Nebula)

Also known as Sh2-125, which specifically refers to the nebula, it is situated about 3300 light-years away in the constellation Cygnus and spans about 15 light years. An extremely young star formed by its material, only about 100,000 years ago, is the primary source of energy that excites the molecular hydrogen in this nebula and causes it to give off light. The dark lane surrounding the cocoon is called Barnard 168.
