Description

NGC 6744 is about 30 million light-years away in the constellation Pavo. It is one of the most Milky Way-like spiral galaxies in our immediate vicinity, with flocculent arms and an elongated core, although at 175000 light years across it is somewhat larger than the Milky Way. It has at least one distorted companion galaxy (NGC 6744A), superficially similar to one of the Magellanic Clouds.

The yellowish core is dominated by the light from old, cool stars. Beyond the core, spiral arms filled with young blue star clusters and pinkish star forming regions sweep past the smaller satellite galaxy NGC 6744A
