Description

This image depicts the central portion of the Flaming Star, at the heart of which is the variable star HIP24575 or AE Auriga. This star is responsible for illuminating this wonderful nebula. This O-Type or Orion type variable is what is known as an eruptive variable star. It is approximately 1460 ly from Earth, and in theory, resulted from a collision of two binary systems, all tracing their roots back to Trapezium in the constellation Orion.
