C14 Under the Night Sky in Bend

Description

The prediction was for poor transparency and clouds so I was stunned to walk out under perfectly clear skies right after sunset. I quickly headed out to the airport where I keep the telescope. Dang! By the time I got there, scattered clouds were starting to roll in. You never know so I rolled the scope out and got set up. It's was almost perfect... slightly cool (13 C) with zero wind. Once I was set up, the clouds rolled in for real and I started to take things back in. What the heck, I decided to take the opportunity to take some images of my setup while I was out there. I had so much fun taking pictures that I hardly noticed that it had cleared again! Anyway, here's what my C14 roll-out rig looks like while it's taking data under the dark, high desert skies of central Oregon. Guiding was nearly perfect (<0.3 arc-sec rms); however, you can also see those pesky scattered clouds that kept screwing up my 15 minute subs. This image was taken under skies that were 20.83 mag/"" so it was only a "moderately" dark night (our best is around 21.4 mag/"".) All the ground lights around the airport help to illuminate the setup--even though to my eye it seemed pretty dark. My four hour effort only resulted in about 2 good subs...oh well.
