Description

IC 417 is an emission nebula in the constellation Auriga, approximately 7,500 light years away.

IC 417 has been called the Spider Nebula, but that is not really represented in this image. I only imaged the brightest region for a short period of time through a non-reduced C11. Nevertheless, I think it makes an interesting image. I got started late and had a C11 already mounted, so I imaged this because the bright region is small. Windows automatically rebooted, shaving two hours off my intended imaging session.

The very bright star is Phi Aurigae, a double star that is about 450 light years away. It was so bright compared to the nebula that I had to dim that region of the image down and layer it back into the image to remove the huge halo on the Baader filters.

[EDIT: I originally thought I was looking at NGC1931 and wrote an entirely incorrect description!. It was actually IC 417 nearby].
