Description

The alternative moniker for this galaxy seen edge-on is the Hamburger Galaxy for obvious reasons. NGC 3628 is gravitationally bound with its neighbors M65 and M66 (outside of this image) in a grouping known as the Leo Triplet. Gravitational forces of this encounter are responsible for the warped and puffy shape of the disk as well as a faint tidal tail extending from the left end of the disk. Also seen is a jet of material being ejected below the galaxy's center .

NGC 3628 lies 35 million light years distant beyond our Milky Way.

This image was captured under high desert skies near Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA with a telescope of 12" aperture at f/8 and an electrically-cooled CCD camera.
