Description

"The bow of the Archer"

Wide Field in the constellation Sagittarius

Taken during the new moon of June, this single panel image reveals the astounding beauty of the heavens. This region is visible with the naked eye under dark sky conditions. Through a telescope the nebula come alive.

Visible in the photo are the Lagoon Nebula, Hourglass Nebula, Triffid Nebula, Ic4685, and several regions of new star formation not unlike the Orion Constellation.

Along with nebula, Sagittarius also hosts a stellar nursery full of several enormous stars. Of note are yellow giant, 11 Sagittarii, a star 15.2 times the diameter of our own star and 785 times more luminous than our own sun. 4 Sagittarii is a blue-white main sequence star that is only 4.9 times the diameter of our sun. In the core of the Lagoon Nebula, 9 Sagittarii illuminates the body of gasses inside the heart of the Lagoon. The star is an extremely hot O5 star that is 23,000 times more luminous than our sun!

In 2006, research with telescopes such as the Hubble Space Telescope revealed four Herbig-Haro objects inside the hourglass providing the first evidence of active star formation by accretion within it.
