Description

The Crescent Nebula with the Cygnus Bubble Nebula at the top.

This is one of the most difficult images I have processed to date. Trying to stretch the Ha and Oiii in the presence of so many stars and trying to keep the correct balance between the Ha and Oiii. I hope to add this to some RGB in the near future.

23 x 15min Ha

30 x 15min Oiii

Mapped to RGB as: R = Ha; G = 0.2xHa + 0.8xOiii; B = Oiii.

The Crescent Nebula (NGC6888) is an expanding shell of hydrogen gas measuring16x25 light years across. It is illuminated by a central brilliant Wolf-Rayet star (WR 136); 15 times more massive than our sun and about 3.3 times larger.

WR 136 blew off a shell of material when it became a red supergiant around 120,000-240,000 years ago. The powerful high velocity stellar wind (3.8 million mph) associated with this Wolf-Rayet star is catching up with the material shed from the star and shaping it into a growing expansion shell of shed material, rich in hydrogen and oxygen.
