Description

My first image with this new telescope (TS 8 inch f/5 ONTC) was M27. I took lots of 15 second exposures so I could get a good feel for how well the coma corrector was working. The stars looked reasonable in that shot so I moved on to trying to guide this large scope. I am using a AP Mach1 and it seemed to barely notice the scope was on it! I estimate the weight of the ONTC and guider and camera is around 35 lbs. The guider is a little 50mm finder scope I converted to use an Orion SSAG camera. It rides on the back of the main scope.

For this image I used 90 second exposures at gain=225. I believe I was getting closer to the minimum optimal exposure for my skies and the H-alpha filter.

The image is noisy and I obviously need many more frames for a production shot - this is more of an engineering image and it gave me confidence I can use an external guide scope, which I find MUCH easier than an OAG.

Looks like I can go up to 300s until differential flexure becomes a problem. This should be enough for the ASI1600MM and the fast f/4 speed of this OTA.
