Description

Located in Cepheus and around magnitude 7, this is a wonderful example of a reflection nebula. Its unusual structure gave rise to the name, the Iris Nebula as it reminds us of the flower.

The nebula is illuminated by light from a Mag 6.8 star (HD200775) in its center. The bright blue light seen here is due to light being reflected off dust particles that survived the star's birth. There are faint hints of red color, hydrogen emission, surrounding the central star and in the Northern portion of the reflection nebula.

Images of this object frequently capture the dense dust cloud that resides towards the West. While you can certainly see the lanes here, I think I'd have to more than double my 7.4 hours of integration to show them in greater detail.
