Description

Due to an unfortunate error with a porch light and the neighbors’ tree, I didn’t have near enough color data here, but I’m learning to be more selective about subframe selection and that helped a lot with color gradients. They are still present, as is some optical distortion in one corner which is likely because I don’t have the image plane perfectly flat with respect to the sensor. However, this is still another image that is dramatically better with the new ASI1600MM-Cool camera than I was ever able to get before. I’m really loving the huge field of view and the ability to oversample my optical resolution a bit. The only downside is the amount of time required to process these huge files. I could spend a lot more time trying out different processing; I may want to try doing some of the things I now do in Photoshop in StarTools instead.

Date: 29 Dec 2016

Subject: IC 443, Jellyfish Nebula

Scope: AT8IN+High Point Scientific coma corrector

Filters: ZWO 31 mm RGB, ZWO 7nm Hα

Mount: EQ-6 (EQMOD)+PEC

Guiding: Orion TOAG +DSI Ic+PHD 2.6.2.4 (Win 10 ASCOM)

Camera: ASI1600MM-Cool, -20 °C, acquired Hα 1x1 RGB 2x2

Acquisition: Sequence Generator Pro 2.6.0.1

Exposure: 8x300 s R, 6x300 s G, B; 24x600 s Hα

Stacking: Neb 4.1.2, flats & darks, trans+rot align, Nebulosity 40-60%tile stack.

Processing: align and combine the unstretched R, G, B. Stretch and sharpen the Hα data aggressively, the RGB less so in StarTools 1.4. Add the Hα as luminance to the RGB in Photoshop CC 2014 with Carboni’s Astronomy Tools, adjust curves on background to get colors about right; layer masked levels and curves to try and reduce the reflections from Propus and reduce some background fog; Astroframe.
