Description

The Horsehead Nebula (Barnard 22), a dark dust cloud silhouetted against a luminous band of ionised hydrogen gas. At the top of the frame is the bright blue supergiant star Alnitak, the easternmost of the three stars that make up Orion's belt. Just to the left of Alnitak is the Flame Nebula, and down from the Flame nebula is a blue star with hints of nebulosity around it. This is NGC 2023, a reflection nebula whose light is as the name suggests reflected light from the nearby star, rather than the nebula being self-luminous.
