Description

A barred spiral galaxy seen almost face-on, in the constellation Hydra. Distinct spiral arms can be seen with a moderate to large telescope. It has a reasonably bright nucleus. Its diameter is about 1/3 of the Full Moon. M83 has a very large number of star forming regions throughout its spiral arms. Six supernovae have been observed in M83 since 1923.
