Description

Jupiter is the fifth planet from our sun and the largest planet in the solar system. Although the famous Red Spot is not visible in this image, plenty of other spots, stripes and swirls are visible consisting mainly of cold, windy clouds of ammonia and water. The atmosphere is mostly hydrogen and helium. Jupiter is surrounded by more than 50 moons. The four largest moons, discovered by Galileo, are shown here. The closest moon on the right, Io, is about the same distance from Jupiter as our moon is from earth. Jupiter rotates faster than any other planet. In fact, since north is to the top in this image, careful examination of this image will show a central horizontal bulge from its rotational motion. Jupiter spins so fast that my exposure times are limited to 3 minutes to prevent blurring of the image.
