Description

I love shooting through a narrowband hydrogen alpha filter. With this filter, you only get the narrow spectrum of light given off by glowing hydrogen gas, and it brings out lots of detail that would otherwise be lost in a full color astronomical image. In this example we see the heart of the "Flaming Star Nebula", IC-405, in the constellation of Auriga. This was captured through my long focal length scope, so is a much closer view than most images of this area on the web. The maelstrom of activity in the huge cloud is evident. Even at this scale, our entire solar system would be only a few pixels wide. We live our lives virtually unaware of the huge amount of energy and activity surrounding us in the cosmos.
