Description

Messier Object #64 (M64), otherwise known as the "Black Eye Galaxy" in the constellation of Coma Berenices. Huge dust clouds laced with the red telltale glow of star formation line the near side of this spiral galaxy. Interestingly, stars in the central part of the galaxy along with the gas in those parts rotate around the center in one direction, while the faint outer gas clouds visible here, rotate in the opposite direction. This situation is the result of an ancient collision and merger of two separate galaxies. M64 lies at a distance of 17 million light years.
