Description

The Ring Nebula, M57, is a planetary nebula in the constellation Lyra and lies 2300 light years away. It was formed when its red giant parent star expelled the ionized gas into the surrounding interstellar medium. What remains is the ionized shell of gas and a white dwarf star. You can also see the spiral galaxy IC 1296 at the 2 o’clock position relative to M57. This spiral is some 220 million light years away - some 100000x farther than M57, and 100x farther than M31.

This image was taken as a combination of some old LRGB data taken several years ago with an AT8RC along with the Ha data from this past summer using my Edge HD925.
