Description

M97 is the famous Owl nebula in Ursa major. While it is reasonably large as far as planetary nebulae go (about 3' in diameter) and its overall magnitude is around 10, the emission at H-alpha and O-III wavelengths was quite a bit fainter than I was expecting. I had to use rather long (18 min.) subs with 7 nm Ha and O-III filters to obtain reasonable data, and the image is still not very deep. Total integration time was 5 hrs. and 42 min.

A synthetic luminance channel was created in GIMP by combining all frames (for the sky background and stars) with H-alpha data (for the central disk of the nebula only). H-alpha was mapped to the red channel, while O-III was mapped to both green and blue channels. Automatic B-V color correction was applied in Regim, and LRGB combination was done in GIMP 2.9.
