I had the opportunity to practice auto-guiding again. After a day of heavy rain the sky was clear for a few hours. The seeing was horrible, I had even troubles setting the focus with the bahtinov mask because of extreme flickering.

Nevertheless the guiding worked fine, this time I went down to a RMS error of below 1.2", while my image scale with this equipment is 1.8". If I can get those results routinely I will be very happy. I think those good results are mainly due to an almost perfect polar alignment with the SharpCap software which I used for the first time. It is an amazing easy to use Software which makes polar alignment very comfortable.

The final image itself is not very satisfying because of the horrible seeing conditions. The atmosphere was extremely humid, there was a lot of dew on the equipment. This results in loss of sharpness and some weird star halos. Also the stars are quite out of shape due to the extreme flickering.

I will definetly try the beautiful Iris Nebula again, next time hopefully with better conditions and longer integration time to see the beautiful dust clouds.

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
Promotions by Submitters When 3 distinct Submitters promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for Top Pick status. This requirement, in addition to anonymization of images and distribution to only a subset of them, prevents biases and ensures that the best images are selected.
Promotions by Reviewers When 3 distinct Reviewers promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for IOTD status.
Early dismissal Staff members have a lot of images to inspect on a daily basis, and they can dismiss images if they believe they don't meet the requirements for IOTD/TP selection. If an image is dismissed 5 times, it's removed from the process. This streamlines the process and ensures that any bias present in promotions could be overruled by other staff members.
