Description

M18 is an open cluster located 4800 light years away in the constellation of Sagittarius at a declination of -17 degrees.  It is a magnitude 7 cluster which spans 7 arc-minutes in our apparent view.  This corresponds to a diameter of 10 light years.

This object is a relatively dim open star cluster of about 40 stars located in the constellation of Sagittarius.  Most of the stars in M18 are small but the cluster is also home to several large, bright blue, yellow and orange stars. The cluster lies against the background of the dusty Milky Way galactic plane.
