Description

This object is a beautiful and often viewed planetary nebula, located in the northern constellation of Draco (the Dragon). It consists of two main parts, the inner "eye" which gives the object its name (and which is the only part of this object able to be viewed visually), and the beautiful wispy hexagon-shaped gas exterior, primarily comprised of oxygen. This dying star has ejected rings of gas in several phases - the oldest from about 60,000 years ago in the outermost edge, while the very bright inner portions are from ejections around 1,000 years ago. It is very hard to capture any detail on the inner eye because it is so small and bright. The interesting reddish object just above the Cat's Eye appears to me to be a hydrogen knot, perhaps from the Cat's Eye itself even though it doesn't look connected in the image.
