Description

Located in the heart of Cygnus, NGC 6888 is a marvelous thing to see. It's delicate ribbed filaments of nebulosity, resulting from a Wolf-Rayet Star, WR 136, seen at its center. Between 250,000 and 400,000 years ago, WR 136 grew into a red giant, ejecting much of what is seen as the nebula today. Outward and inward moving shock waves create a strong X-ray signal, and result in the unusual patterns observed.
