Description

What's not to love about winter nights? The feature-rich core of the Milky Way is in southern skies for around 6 months of the year. The supergiant Antares (the heart of Scorpio) lies at the head of the 'dark river' dust lane that runs from Rho Ophiuchi down toward the Pipe dark nebula. Saturn can be seen in its current position at the bottom of this linear dust lane. The pink Lagoon nebula and blue-green Trifid nebula pair can be made out at 5 o'clock from Saturn, within the Dark Rift structure. From Ventnor, Phillip Island, Victoria. Single image (20 second exposure; ISO 2000, Samyang 24mm shooting at f1.8).
