Description

I finished imaging Sadr and Vacinity and it was still early for me so I looked around to see if

I could find something else to image. The sky pretty much decided for me where I was

going to image. There were clouds everywhere except the area in and around Cassiopeia. I

wondered if there was something in Cassiopeia that I haven't imaged. I got a star chart out

and noticed two nebula near the star (yCas). I've never imaged or seen these objects before.

Since they were very near a bright star making up the constellation Cassiopeia I would have

no trouble aiming my scope. As I began taking images I could just barely see a little nebulosity

although it was very dim. I managed to get 25 images before heavy clouds shut me down.

When I began processing I could see both nebulae but IC 59 was very weak and dim. IC 63 was

dense and brighter than IC 59. I don't know how many times I processed my image last night and this

morning trying to get something I was pleased with. The two objects are very close to each

other and one is relatively bright where the other is very dim and to add more challenge to

the processing both objects are located very near the bright star (yCas). I finally got tired of

reprocessing the image and said ok this is it. When I look at my image now I feel I may have

pushed the saturation a little too much. In the later stages of my processing the nebulae were

just about where I wanted them. I just needed a tiny amount of brightness. I found that

trying to use curves or levels wouldn't work because the change was too drastic. I discovered

that cranking up the saturation in very small increments did give the appearance of more

brightness to the nebulae but didn't blow out the nebulosity or surrounding star field. However

I may have used to much saturation. Anyway I know I always get too wordy but with all of

that said please enjoy my first image of IC 59 and IC 63. One last thing and I'm through

talking. These objects are a fantastic target that apparently are not imaged much. IC 63

is a beautiful and graceful looking nebula. I only captured part of the nebulosity because of

the short exposure. However I've seen images today of these objects that are awesome.
