Description

This star forming region contains a huge pillar of dark dust, pretty similar to the well-known Elephant Trunk nebula (IC 1396A).

The hydrogen gas in Sh2-86 is illuminated by bright blue stars from the young open cluster NGC 6823. The radiation from these stars also erodes the surrounding gas and dust, which creates these interesting dark pillars and Bok globules.

From my light-polluted site, the dim nebulosity is almost invisible in RGB, but shows up reasonably well with the hydrogen alpha filter. I made the HaRGB composite using the NBRGBCombination script. For framing, I decided to include some of the colorful bright stars around the nebula.
