Description

Messier 38 - An open cluster in the constellation of Auriga. This cluster of stars is approximately 3500 ly for earth and is around 25 ly across. It was discovered in 1654 by Giovanni Batista Hodierna.

Open clusters are a group of stars that have formed from the same molecular cloud. They are loosely gravitationally bound to each other. The can consists of up to a few thousand stars.
