Description

The southern milky way taken from the central west of NSW, Australia. For many centuries, the Australian aborigines have identified areas of the sky by the shapes in the dark dusty areas of the milky way. If you look at the dark areas of the milky way in this image you may see the shape of an Emu, an iconic Australian flightless bird. Start looking around the coal sack nebula near the southern cross (Crux) and you might see the head of the bird with the beak pointing across to the right of the image. Moving diagonally down and to the left is the long neck of the Emu expanding out into its body just above the tree line. The glow on the horizon is light from nearby built up areas.

Image taken with a a Samyang 14mm F2.8 lens and Canon 60Da DSLR. For the sky part of the image, 14 x 180s exposures at F5.6 were taken using a Skywatcher HEQ5 tracking mount. These were then stacked together in Pixinsight and then combined in Photoshop with a single, untracked, 180s exposure for the foreground.
