Description

M53 is a 220 light year wide globular cluster located around 58,000 light years distant in the constellation of Coma Berenices. It was discovered by Johann Elert Bode on 3 February 1775. NGC 5053 is another globular cluster that is a similar distance away. It was first observed by William Herschel on 14 March 1873. A 'tidal bridge' has been detected between the two clusters, although this cannot be sen in this image.
