Description

In the heart of the Galaxies Cluster of Virgo is a curious chain of galaxies known as the Markarian Chain. In the chain, which we see in the above image, highlight (top right) two large but not very detailed lenticular galaxies, M84 and M86, and connect with the large spiral from the bottom left, M88. Although it is not part of the Markarian Chain, down to the right is the giant elliptical galaxy M87. The Virgo Cluster, to which these objects belong, is the closest cluster of galaxies, contains more than 2,000 of them, and exerts an important gravitational influence on the Local Group of Galaxies that surrounds our Milky Way. The center of the Virgo Cluster is located about 70 million light-years away in the direction of the Virgo constellation. At least seven of the galaxies in the chain seem to move coherently, although others seem to be superimposed there by chance.
