Description

This object is a globular cluster located in the constellation of Scorpius. It is located between the magnificent cluster M4 (just off image to the upper right) and the bright orange-red giant star Antares (just off image to the lower right). But these objects are not very close to other in three dimensional space - Antares is 600 light years away, M4 is 6000 light years away, and this cluster is 30,000 light years away!

The colors of the cluster are hard to see though the dusty Rho Ophiuchi dust cloud illuminated by Antares. Stephen James O'Meara called this cluster "one of the most overshadowed and overlooked globular clusters in the heavens, easily mistaken for a ghost image of a star."
