Description

This was the first of a pair of M27 images from 2018.

This image was taken with a Stellarvue SV-70t, the matching focal reducer, and a ZWO ASI-183 Monochrome Pro camera with AstroDon Gen 2 E-Series RGB filters. I actually took this image as an example for use in a sales advertisement for the OTA & camera but, after seeing the image, I think that I will just hang on to it. It is such a fun to use combination.

One of my processing goals for this image was not to "over shine" in the luminance channel so that the hour glass structure of the nebula would show through a little better. Unfortunately, cutting back too much on the luminance can make the nebula look emaciated. There are also some little vertical spikes on some stars that I'm puzzling over. My most recent idea (thanks, Mike) is that they might be optical defects related to the FR and then mangled up a bit after dithering, flipping and integration. On the bright side, I really like to look at all of those stars. Surely, some of them have something interesting going on? Oh well, dare to dream.

I acquired about 75 180 second sub-frames for each LRGB channel. I kept about 60 of those for each channel for a total of about 12 hours.

The OTA rode on a Software Bisque Paramount MyT and was controlled by a set of custom scripts for The SkyX Professional running on a Macintosh. All Processing was done using PixInsight 1.8, also running on a Macintosh.
