Description

NGC 6992 was discovered by William Herschel in 1784.

It is the eastern part of the Veil SNR Nebula, a cloud of heated and ionized gas and dust, and also the brightest and most complex part, particularly on its southern portion.

This SNR is composed of hundreds of intertwined, thin narrow streamers of nebulosity, which are well seen in this picture.

The supernova explosion that created the Veil Nebula occurred 5,000 to 10,000 years ago.

It is located 1,400 to 2,500 light-years away in the constellation of Cygnus and this part of the nebula is predominantly oriented NW-SE
