Description

Described as a "dusty curtain" or "ghostly apparition", mysterious reflection nebula vdB 152 really is very faint. It lies about 1400 light-years away, along the northern Milky Way in the royal constellation Cepheus.

Near the edge of a large molecular cloud, pockets of cosmic dust in the region block light from background stars or scatter light from the embedded bright star (top) giving parts of the nebula a characteristic blue color.

Ultraviolet light from the star is also thought to cause a dim reddish luminescence in the nebular dust. Though stars do form in molecular clouds, this star seems to have only accidentally wandered into the area, as its measured velocity through interstellar space is very different from the cloud's velocity. CAPTURE Information:

The image was captured with the new iOptron CEM120 mount , the venerable Meade 12"LX200 SCT, and my Atik 383L+ m CCD at F7.16 (2182mm FL). Astronomik's L, R, G and B broad band filters were used. All subs (L, R, G, B) were taken at 1x1 bin, -10C, and 5 minutes.

IMAGE information -- 2018:

Lum 600s: 41 subs (6.83hr) on Nov 11th, 16th, 23rd and 28th.

Red 300s: 19 subs (1.58hr) on Nov 23rd and 28th.

Green 300s: 19 subs (1.58hr) on Nov 23rd, 27th and 28th.

Blue 300s: 20 subs (1.67hr) on Nov 25th and 27th.

Processing was done with PixInsight, following (for the most part) kayronjm's tutorial of Feb. 24th, 2013 . The detail and color came out nicely. North is up and this is a slight crop due to the misalignment accumulation from the different filters and times.

COMMENTS:

This is the 4th posting with the iOptron mount. Guiding is pretty good and I continue to be very pleased with the mount's overall performance.
