Description

Messier 33 (NGC 598) is also known as the Triangulum galaxy or the Pinwheel galaxy. It is barely visible to the naked eye from very dark skies and its visibility is adversely affected by even small amounts of light pollution. This "nearby" spiral galaxy is the 3rd largest in our local group of galaxies after the Andromeda Galaxy (M31) and our own Milky Way. Its total magnitude of 5.7 is distributed over a total area of 70'x45' - making its surface brightness very low. Distance estimates range from 2.9 - 3.1 million light years. The galaxy has a diameter of approximately 60,000 light years and probably contains 30-40 billion stars. M33 is approaching our solar system at 182km/s.
