Description

A “Cosmic Caravan” travels on the outskirts of the IC1396 nebula complex about 1500 light years away from us. These kind of dark formations are often birthplaces for new stars which makes them very interesting for researchers. These structures were cataloged in the Lynds’ Dark Nebulae catalog in 1962, receiving the designation LDN 1102. Building the LDN catalog involved manually going through hundreds of photographic plates or prints thereof produced by a large survey telescope at the famous Palomar Observatory. All measurements were done by hand, of course.
