Description

This is the 31st object cataloged by Sidney van den Bergh in his 1966 catalog of reflection nebulae. Residing in Auriga, the primary star AB Aurigue, some 470 light years distant, is surrounded by a host of dark, dusty nebulae. These dark nebulae were also cataloged in the early 1900’s by Edward Barnard. Many stars struggle to be seen through the cloud of dust, while others behind the most dense part, are hidden.

I have typically seen this area imaged in a wider field of view and thought I would take a closer look at what is hiding next to the clouds. Was hoping for more data, but weather made that decision for me. :-) Thanks for taking a look. First LRGB image with the ATIK 16200.

“If the stars should appear one night in a thousand years, how would men believe and adore; and preserve for many generations the remembrance of the city of God which had been shown! But every night come out those envoys of beauty, and light the universe with their admonishing smile” (Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nature and Selected Essays.)
