Description

This image captures a series of five circular Sharpless HII emission objects located 8000 light-years away in the constellation of Orion. I have attached an annotated image to assist with the description below.

The three main objects, top to bottom, are Sh2-254, Sh2-257, and Sh2-255. To the right of Sh2-257 is the smaller nebula, Sh2-256. At the bottom of the image is the smallest of these 5 Sharpless nebulae, Sh2-258. In the annotated image, I have circled the ionizing stars which have been identified for each of these HII regions. A massive young star cluster, S255-2, is also identified on the annotated image. This cluster is well hidden by the extreme amount of dust in this region.

Thin brownish dust lanes wind through all of these nebulae. Several darker black patches of dust, dark enough to blot out all of the stars behind them, are also seen towards the center of the image.

This is a bright object, easy to image and process. It is fairly accessible for most of us in the northern hemisphere. I am not why it is not a more popular object.
