Description

This object is a lenticular galaxy located 80 million light years away in the constellation of Camelopardalis. It is a Seyfert galaxy with a luminous core. The galaxy is large, with an estimate diameter of 200,000 light years.

My favorite part of this image is the interesting, asymmetric dust lane on the left side of galaxy center. I also like the faintly visible tidal arms on the right side of the outer galaxy region. Finally, the faint patch of stars towards the bottom is also very interesting. It looks like a distant dwarf galaxy. All of these signs point to a possible recent galaxy merger

A galaxy was discovered in this region of the sky in 2017. I attached an annotated image with the location of the faint galaxy. The galaxy is defined as a low surface brightness galaxy, and as such is difficult to discern from the background. This new galaxy is described in more detail on this Astrobin post (https://www.astrobin.com/344624/?nc=all) by the discoverer, Frederick Steiling.
