Description

Quite steady seeing last night - here is Clavius at quite good resolution. At 231 km wide and 3.5 km deep, Clavius is the 2nd (or 3rd) largest crater (excluding the mare impacts) on the visible side of the moon. Clavius is named after the 16th century German mathematician, astronomer and Jesuit Priest - Christopher Clavius (1537-1612).

In popular fiction, Clavius Base was featured in novel and film versions of 2001 - A Space Odyssey by Arthur C. Clarke.

Clavius is one locality where you can see a crater within a crater within a crater with an amateur telescope (on the eastern rim of Clavius).
