Description

I've been looking to expand my kit to include a short refractor which will give me the opportunity to image a wider field. I did a ton of research and finally settled on the Skywatcher Esprit 80 ED. For my first light with the Esprit 80 I chose to image the Western Veil Nebula (NGC 6960).

The Western Veil Nebula is part of the Cygnus Loop, a supernova remnant resulting from a star roughly 20 times the size of the sun which exploded 8 thousand years ago. Since that time the gas which was once part of the star has expanded out forming the beautiful nebula we see today. Even after 8 thousand years portions of the nebula are continuing to expand at nearly a million miles per hour! There is a cool video made by the Hubble Heritage Team you can find on YouTube which clearly shows the expansion of the Nebula over time, check it out.
