Description

First Quarter Moon – T3i First Light

So I now have three Canon cameras; my first was the Canon Rebel XT and if you know the XT you know that to focus you must look through the Viewfinder Eyepiece, there is no Live View on this camera. This in itself make shooting at night hard, and then add progressive glasses and 65 year old eyes! I worked with this for a year and a half. This camera is now used with a Canon stock lens (18-55 mm) and a Vivitar wide angle lens for very close ups of mostly flowers (see my Facebook page if you are interested).

Then I got my night camera, the modified Canon T7i. With this camera I can get lots more data of the night sky; however it does not work in the daylight or the night landscape. With the IR filter removed the day images contain too much pink and the night landscape greens turns grey. I will be using this camera only for night work (Moon and DSO) with the Sigma 150-600 mm telephoto lens set on the iOptron SkyGuider Pro (to be ordered soon).

So of course I need a camera for images between very close ups and DSO. Even though the Canon T3i is discontinued it is still a great camera, I see it being used here often. The price was right on Amazon ($179 US body only). This camera will be used with two lenses, the Canon 55-250 mm telephoto lens for daylight birding images (also on Facebook), some night work (used on this image), and at night with the Rokinon 16 mm lens for time lapse images of the night sky and landscape (I thinking Milky Way, Moon rises, and maybe Sunsets or Sunrises). And of course for the First Light I had to use this camera on the night sky; that was a no-brainer.

I hope you enjoy this First Light with the new, but used, Canon T3i. Another Moon will be coming to fully test this camera.
