Description

This object is a spiral galaxy located 50 million light years away in the constellation of Hercules. This often seen but rarely observed galaxy is located very close to the magnificent M13 globular cluster. In fact, stars at the edge of M13 can be seen in the lower right corner.

This galaxy is small, with a diameter of 45,000 light years and an apparent size to us of 3 arc-minutes. The galaxy is seen by us in an inclined view, about 20 degrees from edge-on. A bright foreground Milky Way star is visible just above the galaxy core. Numerous Ha regions and bright star clusters are visible in the galaxy arms.

Seen in the lower right corner is the spiral galaxy IC 4617, small in our apparent view but large in actual size. This galaxy is 110,000 light years in diameter and is located about a half billion light years away.
