Description

The Trifid Nebula (which in Latin means divided into three lobes) is a bright cloud of cosmic star dust that lies in the constellation Sagittarius approximately 5,200 light years from Earth. It is over 40 light years across and, at only 300,000 years old, it is one of the youngest star forming regions in the sky. New stars are constantly being born here, except in the very centre where a group of hot young stars are releasing of flood of ultraviolet radiation so strong it is blowing away all the gas and dust that would normally form the new stars.
