Description

This object is an interesting combination of bright, dark, and reflection nebulae located about 1500 light years away in the constellation of Cepheus.

In general this area has not been studied much, with the exception of Herbig-Haro object 215. HH215 is seen in the dark nebula which is towards the upper left corner of the image. The object appears as a white arc about 0.5 light years long, similar to a comet, emanating from the tiny white dot which is the variable protostar PV Cephei. This newborn star is firing out jets of gas in opposite directions, although in my image the bottom side is obscured by the dark nebula. The object is similar in behavior to Hubble's Variable Nebula and changes shape dramatically over short periods of time. It most often appears as a fan shape, although my image shows a bright long arc. The object was discovered in 1977 by Armen Gyulbudaghian, an Armenian astronomer. Some papers also refer to this outflow as HH315.

This area contains many other HH objects. For example, HH415 is immediately above HH215.

Most interesting to me in this image is the cometary nebula GM 3-12. This bright fan-shaped white nebula on the right side of the image is coming from the young stellar object IRAS 20359+6745. I find it odd that this interesting object, as noticable as HH215, has had such little study.
